Pope & Smith Chelmsford Sunday League - David Marshall Charity Match

History

David Marshall was a Referee on both the Mid-Essex Football League on Saturdays and the Pope & Smith Chelmsford Sunday League on Sundays. He died of cancer in 1993 in his early thirties, leaving a wife and two young children. Chelmsford Referees' Society proposed a memorial match between the two Leagues. David's family, including his father Colin, a well known Referee, were agreeable and the annual charity fixture between the two Leagues began. The family nominated the MOULSHAM GRANGE CHILDRENS CENTRE as the beneficiary of any monies raised as they'd had dealings with it through a family member. All donations collected are paid over to the charity FRIENDS OF THE CHILDRENS CENTRE.

MOULSHAM GRANGE CHILDRENS CENTRE is in Chelmsford. It houses, and is a base for the specialist services for children with GP's in the Maldon & South Chelmsford Primary Care Trust (PCT), Chelmsford PCT and the Braintree and Witham areas of the Braintree, Witham and Halstead Care Trust. The highly skilled and specialist staff teams aim to provide a wide ranging integrated physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy and nursery service to each child's needs. The paediatric speech and language therapy service and the specialist nurseries are managed and administered from Moulsham Grange, with the wider teams working in the community. Children may experience a range of difficulties from birth or acquired later in life, through accident or illness. Each child will have an assessment to identify areas where help is needed. All the staff work closely with the parents/carers and preschools/schools to plan individual programmes to meet the therapeutic needs of the child. The multi-disciplinary team approach enables the child to acquire skills for life and an enthusiasm for living. The teams are committed to having the family at the centre of their planning so that programmes can be integrated into the child's daily routines.

THE FRIENDS OF THE CHILDRENS CENTRE was established in 1986 to support patients, parents and staff by raising funds to provide extras for the children. Over the years the FRIENDS have provided major items such as a large soft playroom, a sound and light room, video and camera equipment, down to smaller items such as therapy toys, teddy bears and Christmas and Summer parties.

Match Report 2010/11

This season's annual David Marshall Charity Competition match between the representative teams of the Pope & Smith Chelmsford Sunday League and the Broch Group Mid-Essex League saw CSL Manager Peter Williams at the helm for his second game. After an impressive 3-0 win in his first game in charge the pressure was very much on the Manager and players to retain the trophy.

The CSL started slowly as the midfield worked hard to gain control of the game, despite the Mid-Essex team having more of the possession early on, they failed to create any clear cut chances due to the defence superbly marshalled by Liam Shepherd. Gradually the midfield trio of McEwen, Cottis and Coggin started to stamp their authority. Some neat interchanges enabled the wide players, Pattison and Miles, along with the ever industrious John Leeder to create havoc in the Mid-Essex final 3rd, supplying opportunities for Coggin and Warwick but despite their best efforts were unable to unlock the door.

The referee drew the first half to a close with both sides unable to break the deadlock.

The early stages of the second half continued in much the same vein, plenty of attacking football but without really testing either keeper. As the CSL pushed forward gaps were left at the back, Mid-Essex took full advantage, launching a counter attack, where, a rare mistake at the back exposed Jamie "the Wall" Finch who was helpless to stop the ball finding the back of the net. The goal was a double blow as Finch was injured in the melee and limped off, handing a surprise debut for part-time keeper Tim Harvey. (We all wish Jamie a speedy recovery.) With the CSL chasing the game a change of formation was implemented, a 3-5-2 allowed Hearn, who had come on for Pattison, to push up alongside Warwick. The fighting spirit and team camaraderie was evident to all those watching and it was hard to believe the squad was made up from 7 different teams across 4 different divisions. With a potent cocktail like this it was only a matter of time before the CSL would reap the rewards. With little over 10 minutes left it was supplied courtesy of a sublime pass from Cottis into the space for Hearn to run on to, but there was still plenty of work to do as Hearn out paced the defender and placed the ball over the advancing keeper, into the top corner. The game was still far from over and in the dying seconds Mid-Essex attacked, with the keeper beaten Walters miraculously cleared off the line.

The final whistle blew with the game all square and going straight to penalties. Presenting a real Roy of the Rovers opportunity for Harvey and he didn't disappoint, saving the 3rd penalty and mentally pressuring the opposition taker of the 4th to blast the ball into the heavens. Warwick, McEwen and Coggin all found the net, meaning the winning kick fell to the calmest man in the stadium, Tom Walters, who in textbook defenders style drilled the ball straight down the middle, retaining the trophy for of the Pope & Smith Chelmsford Sunday League. It was merely left then for Captain Warwick to awkwardly collect the trophy and celebrate a job well done.
